National First Responders Day, observed on October 28th, honors the commitment and sacrifices of first responders, including Paramedics/EMTs, firefighters, 911 dispatchers, and law enforcement officers. The U.S. Fire Administration encourages everyone to take a moment to reflect on the dedication of these individuals and their families.

In tribute to this spirit of service, we highlight an artifact from the Bates Mill: a fire helmet. The Bates Mill maintained its own Fire Crew, which worked in coordination with the Lewiston Fire Department when larger emergencies exceeded their capacity.
