College seniors across the country prepare to graduate this month. Bates College, a private liberal arts institution in Lewiston, Maine, was founded in 1855 by textile magnate Benjamin Bates, for whom the Bates Mills are also named. It holds the distinction of being the state’s third-oldest college. Every May, the newest cohort of seniors celebrates their graduation on the Coram Library Quadrangle before moving on to the next phase of their lives or educational pursuits. The pamphlet shown here, dating from 1901, advertises Bates College’s annual Ivy Day celebration. This event recognizes academic achievement among historical Ivy League colleges and “Little Ivies” like Bates throughout the Northeastern United States.
