With Veteran’s Day approaching later this month, our object of the month is a ration booklet held in our collection. As with many areas of life, the textile, brick, and shoemaking industries of the Androscoggin region felt the effects of WWII. For example, many mills dropped their commercial practice in some departments and focused instead on making war-time products such as parachutes.

Shown here is the outside and inside of a general war ration booklet which belonged to Gladys Hunnewell. Her height, weight, age, and eye color was required to be identified in order to confirm her identity, so she could make use of the stamps in the booklet.

We thank all Veterans for their service.
