This picture of a mallard duck was found in part of our archives. With a nest and a box labeled ‘Mr. Millard’, it seems like the Bates Mill may have had a duck employed! Maine is home to numerous species of aquatic birds, while being known for puffins Maine is also home to Eider ducks, cormorants, ospreys and of course, mallards. For any bird-watchers out there, Thorncrag Bird Sanctuary right here in Lewiston has 450 acres of protected land and plenty of trails to explore. Nearby at Bates College, Lake Andrews is a perfect place to sit and watch for aquatic birds, including ducks just like Mr. Millard. Of course, you can just look right outside and see plenty of Rock Pigeons, Mourning Doves, Chimney Swifts and so many more all across the city.
