This cast iron cobbler’s shoe anvil, used for making and repairing footwear, represents the late 19th and early 20th centuries when shoe manufacturing was central to the economies of Lewiston and Auburn. The Maine MILL’s new location at 1 Beech Street, which will open to the public June 27, 2026, was for a time the location of the National Shoe Company. Notably, before his debut album Trouble, popular singer-songwriter Ray Lamontagne resided in Lewiston and worked in a local shoe factory. Another significant structure is The Barn, a large building at 67 Minot Avenue in Auburn. Built in 1908, it housed the Lunn & Sweet Shoe Co. factory, a member of the National Shoe Manufacturers Association.
